Default Emissions troubleshoot

okay, i went to go take an emissions test today on my 89 crx si, but i failed...

i passed everything on the 50/15 test, as well as the gas cap test.

but i failed on my 25/25 tests except for NOX ppm(nitrous oxides).

my reading for the HC ppm(hydro carbons) was 264 w/ the allowed reading of 239.

and my CO%(carbon oxides) read 5.82 w/ the allowed 1.54.

the emissions inspector suggested that it could be either the head gasket, or exhaust gasket needs to be replaced... what do yall think?

High NOx typically results from too hot or too lean a mixture on the intake. You don't have that problem.

High HCs typcially result from incomplete combustion, or from too rich a mixture. If you have a kewl aftermarket FPR, replace it with a stocker. Chances are the aftermarket ones are rising-rate regulators, because they're supposed to make MADD POWAH YO! And mostly what they do is richen the mixture at higher throttle settings...

Check your ignition system and make sure it's in good working order. You're only a little over on the HCs, so just a little help should get the levels down.

High CO2 can be due to a rich mixture, but not always...

yeah, the way to tell if an o2 sensor is bad is if the ecu throws a code/check engine light
