Default What causes play in the shaft?

I was driving today and my spool didnt seem quite right.. so I checked the turbo when I got home and the shaft has quite a bit of play in it suddenly and my turbo is harder to turn. What the hell happened and how much does it cost to get this fixed?

thats if majestic turbo rebuilds it. bearings are 10 bucks if you do it yourself.

Man what the ****... my turbo was running with no lubrication. The oil line had some piece of rubber clogging it and I got it all out and now the oil flows fine. I started it up and let it flow through the turbo and it spins fine now, and the play is fixed too for some reason. I think there is a piece of debris in the housing though because when I try to rotate the turbo fan the opposite way, it is difficult until I push harder, then it becomes easy, then when I go to turn it the other way,the same situation happens. It's like something is in there and the fan is hitting in, then pushes it out of the way and thus can spin freely. I plan on taking a look at it. Is it safe to take the turbo off of its housing so I can look in the area I think has debris in it? Will I damage the shaft?
BTW, no the turbo is not new, I bought it used. I don't know how old it is. It's a T3 and if a rebuild is only 99 bucks then I'm going to get one. I'm going to go to a diesel turbo shop I know of that does turbo work.. they should be able to quote me on fixing my little T3.

sounds like maybe a bearing came apart.. and yeah the no oil thing would explain it. good luck on your rebuild, i dont see it costing over 100 bucks

can you really do a good job rebuilding yourself? Doesn't it need to be balanced when you are done?

Gruvy I just read a bunch about rebuilding the turbo yourself. You can buy kits for around $150 that come with new gaskets, seals, and rings. No bearings though. Anyway, it's supposed to be fairly easy, but you know how that goes... you usually run into some ****. A guy who rebuilt his twin turbos for his rx-7 said it took him the better part of his day... and he was even and expert machinist with his own machine shop. Although he said it is not difficult, it just takes a while because you have to keep everything clean and be careful. I wouldn't recommend doing it. You can get it done for around the same price at a local shop, on my turbo at least.

So if you do the rebuild yourself, how do you ensure its balanced when its done. If its not balanced, you're gonna be rebuilding it again real soon.

You can't know if it's balanced... I guess you gotta just take it to a shop.

i think everyone on honda-tech has seen your threads... you ran into every problem possible with a turbo install. before you rebuilt it, i suggest you have everything ready the second time around. get the downpipe made, make sure the oil lines work, and get the proper fuel management. just trying to give you helpful advice so you dont rebuilt the turbo for nothing.
