problems with hesitating/jumpy tach
i have a d16y7 w/vtec head in my boosted eg tuned on hondata. all of a sudden one night this past weekend i started to get real bad hesitation, and also noticed the tach jumping around. theres nothing loose. i checked the harness and plug wires, and thats not it. im thinking the distributor took a ****. where do these motors get their rpm signal from?? have yet to check the cap and rotor...
its an electrical load issue.....at least it was for my beater ed6.
The alternator took a crap and caused that same exact issue (along with overpowering electrical acc. under load)

never heard of an alternator to cause problems like this, but ill go out and check the wires that go to the alt... did your tach jump all over the place, and was your motor hesitating like it would drop a cylinder here and there?? thats what my car feels like, so im pretty sure it has to do with spark... also why i asked where the car gets its rpm signal from...

alright where might i find that at?? got a parts breakaway pic? im guessing its in the dizzy somewhere? sorry, just got into this eg about a month or so ago... but had a lude i boosted before the 240.
nevermind i found a pic of one and read that they are all interchangable between 1.5 and 1.6 motors (B and D)

now if the ignitor was bad, wouldnt it cause my car to either fire or not fire at all???

ok real quick guys.... my car broke down on me this am on my way to work 1hr away. i got it home now (towed). while i was waiting for the driver, i checked for spark and none at all. it was hesitating real bad when i was driving it then all of a sudden died on me. anyways, im home now and went to the zone and got a new dizzy. all i did was take the ignitor out of the new one and put it in my old dizzy and it fired right up. i went to hit the gas and it sounds like a 2-step. so something def isnt right. i know i put the rotor on the correct way it came off.... it idles fine, its just when i hit the gas it bounces around 3k and wont rev any higher. im planning on just taking the ignitor out of the new one, putting my old one back in, and getting my money back on the dizzy. both ignitors looked the same where the wires plug into it, but the new one only has only one screw holding the cover on it, and is shaped just a tad bit differently. im pretty sure this has nothing to do with it. the one that came out of my dizzy looks just like the one in the pic. any quick help? i might just put the whole new dizzy on but would rather keep my $200
purrrs like yo mamas *****...... thanks alot everyone. it was the ignitor itself the whole time. the one i got from the zone was an obd1 dizzy and the difference in the two is what made the difference. externally where they wires plugged into it they looked the same. but the actual physical shape/look of it was different. i went and got an obd2 dizzy and it was the exact same **** i had. plugged it in and we got fire baby! also cost me $0
