The type of freon depends on the year of the car.
Older cars were R12, and then some time in the early-mid 90's they switched to 134a.
If it is r12, I would recommend converting to the new style. To do this, you just need fittings to fit on your A/c lines.
And what engine do you plan on putting in your car?
depending on which one it is, it'll decide if you need a new compressor or not.

no a D-series are the same.
no a D-series are the same.
right next to my triple A they had an auto place... one of the guys there quoted me at 50 bucks... i found another A/C place... the guy said 25 bucks.
what you could do... is open the two plastic thingies (caps) on the A/C lines (nothing will come out)
get a long stick... and put a nail in one end ... in a way that if you're pointing the stick forward...the nail would be pointing straight down.
this is the tricky part - maneuver that nail into the place underneaeth the caps - and use it to "press the button." you're going to have to keep pressing it. when you start to smell it... run away...take a deep breath... wait for it to settle... go back and continue... if you can smell it - run... oh and make sure you cover your engine bay - that stuff can get everywhere...
