if you are moving to AZ, you will regret not putting i the a/c. there is nothing like have it when it's 100 degrees outside, especially when you have a pretty lady in the car and her make up is running because you don't have a/c.
and even that is not hard.

well, i purchased mine for my 93 dx on ebay i paid $300. so if you go to a salvage yard and pull it yourself, it should be alot cheaper.
hmm...you will need:
1. condenser (make sure the fan comes with it)
2. compressor
3. evaporator
4. dryer
5. hard lines
6. a/c switch for the a/c controls.
7. freon
8. new compressor belt ( that's if your civic has the pulley for the a/c if not)
9. crank pulley
10. start the car, turn it on and go pick up the first hot chick you see and take her for a ride.
oh, and if my list is missing anything, feel free to add!

Just make sure the compressor, lines, receiver/dryer, and fittings are for R-134 or R-12. Don't mix and match.
R-134 would be best if buying new parts.

he has a 98 civic dx, there is no r-12. only r-134.

From what my contractor friends tell me, it can be kinda painful to get R-12. Evidently my state requires a ton of paperwork, and the federal paperwork isn't anything to sneeze at either.
This isn't an issue though because with 98 you're not going to be able to use R-12 parts - all the cars in your generation (1996-2000) had AC systems designed for R-134. If you find an R-12 system it won't work on your car without some extra effort (and probably $), because it's for a different generation Civic.
BTW, are you sure he needs an evaporator? I remember hearing they built that bit into all models, because it's a PITA part for a dealer to install. Though maybe that just applied to newer (200x-ish) models.

i got a new compressor ... if i were to take the old one out ... and put the new one in what oil would i have to use on the compressor. and beside draining the a/c system what else would i have to do ?

That didn't even register till you pointed it out. I'm too used to fooling with cars that need a retrofit.
