engine making a weird sound.
this morning on the way to scool my engine started to make a sort of 'grinding' sound. if the car is in neutral the sound almost goes away but as soon as its in gear it makes the sound and the louder i go the more 'fast paced' it gets and a bit louder too. i drive a 92 civic DX btw with a manual transmission. any help would be appriciated.
If you let your car fully warm up does it go away or get diminished?
Any time it gets cold outside my engine makes all kinds of nasty sounds that go away once it warms up.

you said the sound gets quieter while the car is in neutral, what about when you engage the clutch?
it's possible that it could be clutch related
it's possible that it could be alot of things though.

wow, we should be friends my car is making a weird sound too. but mine is a knocking in the engine I bought from crxspoonb18c5. Hopefully yours isn't that bad. Good luck man.
I somehow found this relative because his symptoms almost sound the same as mine.

i do not believe so. i havent had to much time to really test things out but it does appear that way. although if it helps my inner tie rods ARE broken :X

well on the way to school i would imagine that it would be fully warmed up and it was still making the sound. unless of course you are talkin about letting it sit there, then no i have not tried this. one thing i have noticed is that it is really loud once the engine is tarted then quiets down about 5 seconds after its started.

yes if i put it in neutral manually with the stick or pushing in the cluth the sound gets softer. it also appears to be coming out of the bottom of the car which made me think it was the exhaust at first. i naturally here it from the river front side so thats where it sounds like its coming from the worst (but from the bottom) i also went to the rear and listened to the exhaust and it also seems like its sputtering just a little bit more then usual as well.

apparently if the car is in gear (any gear) and the clutch is pushed in the sound is just about gone. i can barely hear it. also, i dunno if it matters but on the way home the other day, i couldnt get it to go into 5th gear...
