Default Gas Tank Related

This may sound/be a stupid question, but I'd like someone who knows something about gas tanks to answer my question. When you fill up gas and you take the gas cap off do you guys/gals notice how it has like a metal thing that blocks the hole into the tank? (IF you guys/gals dont know what I mean go and take off your gas cap and you will see the metal I'm talking about). I noticed today that my car didn't have one of those metal blocking things and you can probably see into the tank if you had a flash light. My question is, is that going to affect anything like emissions, safety, gas mileage, and it's not going to let gas out all over the place is it? Sounds stupid, but a concern for me. It's a 2000 civic

unless that acts as a pressure valve, i do not see what it could do. As long as you have your cap on, i think you will be okay. In for a more definite answer.

There's no CEL's, don't smell gas, car runs and drives fine. I'm just concern just because all the cars I had all have the metal piece and this one doesn't. Might not be a big deal, but I dont know just need some info.

I'm pretty sure all that metal piece does is try to keep people from steal your gas with a hose.

Could be, but I guess its ok as long as theres no CEL's and the car drives fine.

Doesn't really work too well if that's what it does.

Thanks a lot for the replies I appreciate it. Just the first car I owned without one so thats why I was just curious. I feel dumb because I've done all sorts of stuff like motor swaps, turbo installs, tuning turbo setups, and I cant even answer my own question. Hahaha

Just curious if any guys with 99-2000 civic go and check theirs to see if they have one or not. Let me know

It's just to block things from going into the tank before you put the gas station nozzle in.
