Timing Belt
Well I decided to replace my timing belt on my 95 Ls, and do all the work my self. This is my first time doing this project, and I have come across a little problem with some slack in the belt. I am able to get the new belt on fine, but when I tighten the tensioner, there is still a lot of slack in the belt, so much that I can slide the belt back and forth on the cam gears. Is this normal? How much slack should I have on this belt, as it says nothing in the Helms manual about this. The belt is a 14400-P7J-004.
Where is the slack at? if it is on the exhaust side of the engine then the belt is on incorrect. I just changed my timing belt on my DA, when i first put it on there was about the same amount of slack. I had to take the belt back off and re-adjust it there should not be much slack at all.
Hope this helps,
B

That is what I ened up doing to remove the slack, and it worked good. I guess I over looked that step while doing it. Lesson learned!
Now I have another problem with my valve lash adjustment. It seems that pistons 1, and 2 adjust fine on both the intake and exhaust side, but when I go to do pistons 3, and 4 the exhaust side will not adjust at all, no matter how loose I go, I can not fit the feeler gauge in between the valve and cam. Have any of you experienced this?

Well I am second guessing my self, but I did go through #3 and #4 twice, I will have to try again tomorrow. I hope that, that is my problem, it must be, what else could it be?
Yes, I am following the Hlems manuel. As for checking to make sure the lobs are in the correct position, I will have to check again.
Maybe this is a dumb question, but if my timing was off, would this have anything to do with it?

Yes. The valves could be starting to open.

I am not sure, I am almost 100% that the timing is correct, I am going to go give it another shot right now. I just replaced the timing belt myself, that is why I am second guessing the timing. All of the marks lined up at TDC when I put the belt on.
I don't know what I did last night, but I did it no problem today, I must have been too tired or something. No more chattering, it made a huge differance. Would I be able to tell if I screwed up the timing right when I initally start up my car? It seemed fine when I started it up.
