both acl and oem bearings are very good, use one or the other, never used clevite dont have much to say on them..
the most important part in bearings is installation.. checking, rechecking, double checking the clearances is the up most important!!!

You don't really have the ability to get the clearances exactly where you want them with anything other than the OEM bearings.

you are right, it all depends on the builder too, you some may prefer to run a looser clearnace, then others.. it all depends on preference and the viscosity of the oil that will be used, and use of the motor
but if you are using ACL and you come with in the spec that you happy with then by all means you can run them. they are not bad bearings, but if a person wants an exact , like dead on exact clearance. then by all means get oem bearings..
ive used acl in all the motors ive built, and i got the clearances that i am happy with, so far all motors are still running!
ive even seen acl bearings taken out of a motor with NO oil pressure, they sure looked damn good for a bearing on a motor running with no oil pressure
