i don't think there should be ANY play

put it in perspective, if you can notice a play with your bare hands, imagine the load implicated in, lets say a 100km/h curve !

front bearings are very cheap and easy to press in when you have the knukle in hands, i suggest you change them.

I can't remember, i just did two of them this summer too. However, yes the axle nut will pull it all together though. It is easy now that you have them out, but they aren't very hard to take back out either. Personaly i would throw them in, with the axles tighten it all down and see where your at. I have some wheel bearings that have over 200,000 miles on them, with 5+ track days, and are still fine.

When in doubt, take it out.
I would replace the bearing, it would give you the peace of mind. Remember, the slight play on a bearing could lead to something worse.

There should be no play. The play will only get worse over time... and you will have to pull the knuckle again.

Bearing's only $50. Plus $20 labor. Now it's already out. No sense in gambling.

bring the knukle and the new bearing to any mechanics who has a press

some might even charge less than 20$.

to test the bearing for play, and for the test to be valid, the axle needs to be in the knuckle, and torqued to spec

Another vote to put it all together and test it then. I had brand new bearings pressed into the knuckles of my Jetta and when I got them back they were nice and wobbly. I was worried that I'd just wasted a bunch of money to get destroyed bearings, but when I put the axle in and tightened the nut, all the play was gone. 14,000 miles later when I raise the car and press on the wheel there is zero play.

Throw some axles in those.
