Default Buying Coilovers, With out breaking the bank.. GC vs. Other

I have a 91 Honda Accord and I want to put on some coilovers on it. Not the full on coilovers with struts. Can’t afford those. I am so confused. I'm not sure which ones are good and which ones are bad. What is your feeling on Ground control compared to other companies like (APC, OBX, Skunk2, Etc….)? Are the other companies just as good? How do the other companies comparable? It is like day and night difference? Please people, someone get back with me and let me know what you think.

You need to find an application that is suitable for you. What exactly do you want as a result?

Skunk coilovers are stiff as hell, 500lb/in. per corner... GC you can select the spring rates you want. In general, I'd never buy any APC or OBX product.

I'm for sure looking for a ride that is not bumpy... So, APC and OBX is crap? What is the difference?

poor quality products...

Really the important thing is to find a shock that will match the spring rate. A stiff spring will still be tolerable and won't bounce if you have an appropriate shock for that application. For the money, and the optomization, I'd look into GC and selecting your spring rates.

Yeah, Ground control is were I was heading. I like the fact that I can set the sping rate. Here is another question. Were is a good place to buy GC? I'm looking to spend $300.00... Know of any places that have good deals on them?

Listen to me, learn from my mistake. I wanted to lower my car so bad, I went ahead and bought Ractive coilovers via Ebay. This is before I was educated about these companies. Let's just say, my 2 front tires were gone in a month. I also couldnt afford new shocks/struts, so the ride sucked. We bounced everywhere.

Save your $ and do things right the 1st time. Try http://www.groupbuycenter.com for good deals. KYB AGX shocks are good, and at a fair price.

You're right... make sure you have the money to do it right. You'll need to get an alignment anyways to correct the toe. Camber will wear the inside of your tires prematurely, but nothing compared to what the toe will do.

The off the shelf GC for the accord are pretty good, if you want a different spring rate you will need to call GC. I have the gc and kyb agx combo and love it.

So, can I not start out with just Ground Controls and look at getting new struts/shocks later? Do you think there will be any problems using my struts/shocks that are on the car now?

I want to thank everyone for your responses. It has been very helpful. I also like the fact that no one give bonk answers... Everybody on this site seem very friendly and helpful... Thanks again everyone!!!

well you can do the install twice , pay to do the install twice , or buy the whole setup and do the install once .

I also dont think the stock shocks will last very long on the gc, especially if they are old and worn now. I payed almost $300 to have the shocks installed, and later installed the gc myself.

Tell me more about the OBX coilovers. Do you get a lot of noise with them? Are they easy to adjust? How are the springs? Let me know…

GC are good, but for something even more simplier I just had Koni Yellow's with H&R Race springs on my 91 Accord. I must tell you I had Bec-tech adjustable struts before hand thinking they would be good but the car would bounce all over the place and it wasnt really comfortable at high speeds at all..

Since going with the new setup, I loved how the car handled and with the struts you can adjust softness or stiffness to your liking..

All I am saying is that if you want a nice drop then that is the option I would choose. Because who really changes their suspension weekly like that anyway, unless you plan on autoxing or something like that..

Yeah, but I’m not sure how low I want to drop my car. I’m getting 18”s, with 215-35 tires, put on tomorrow and with 18”s I’m not sure were my limit is on how low I can go. I would rather get springs but what if I order a set and don’t like were my car is setting. Right? At lease with GC’s I can dial the height in. I was think I only want to go 2” in the front and 1.75 in the back. But like I said, I’m not sure if that will work with the rims and tires. What do you think?

Well in that case you definately wont need the race springs. With my old setup using Konig 17's and 215/45 tires my back rim was just slightly above the tire with enough room to fit a little kids finger.. Front was to the rim as well but not as bad.. You might want to look into getting the Eibach pro kit instead with some adjustable struts like Koni or KYB...

The only reason why I say this is if you decide to go with GC's and then you still have to buy struts that will probably bring you to close to $700 in total. If you spending that much you might as well get the Apexi tru coilovers for like $810.

well the obx coilover i got for $175 shipped.

when i slammed it all the way, with stock shocks (my struts were blown almost) it was very bouncy!! VERY bouncy...and when i go over a bump it would hit the sleeves.

then i changed to KYB AGX adjustable and Tokico blue shocks, the ride was smooth and only bouncy over bumps.

I then put on a body kit so I had to raise the car about an inch or so, and now it's perfectly smooth =] no noises.
