Default Replacing steering rack a big pain?

When installing my new suspension I noticed that my tie-rod boots had come off their mounts. on me for not taking my car in for scheduled maintainence when money got tight. The dealership would've noticed. I never even checked. Now because I didn't keep up with a $5 part, I get to replace a $750 one. Yay!

Anyway, I don't expect this to be easy, and truthfully will probably just keep topping off the fluid until I have the time and money to do the whole thing. But I've never done a steering rack, and I'm wondering if it's something I can do with the car on jackstands, or if I should just say to hell with it and pay to have it done. Anyone care to share steering rack experiences?

Can be done on jackstands. Itll be a long afternoon job. What does tie rod boots coming off their mounts have to do with replacing the steering rack?

I replaced minebefore Expo5. It took me a better part of 4 hours to do, but most of that time was from tring that damn shift linkage pin. I did it under jack stands also. I used a thread from the Integra forum as reference and it was pretty helpful.

I bought a new rebuilt rack from steeringrack.com. I don't have any complaints about it and the price was .

They let dirt into the rack, which scratches up the insides and makes it impractical to rebuild.

Its pretty straight forward to change the rack using jack stands, just get the car as high up as possible and go for it. Release the 10mm bolt from the knuckle at the steering column then go under the car, separte the tie rod ends from the spindles. Remove the four bolts holding up the driver side lca/subframe and remove 3 of them on the right side (just loosen the one holding up the subframe). Lastly, there should be 3 14mm bolts holding the rack to the car. Release the power steering line then slide it out to the driver's side of the car. I just did my friends which only took us about an hour but we had air tools and a lift. Good luck.
