Default Is this what a bad clutch does?

First, I've had a problem once, with a cold start where it felt as if I didn't even clutch in because I couldn't shift out of gears. Then this happened again, and now... again. Except this time when I started the car it was idling at about 500rpms and it was strange since this was a cold start. Am I not supposed to start my car in 1st? I couldn't shift out of first and I had to turn the car off and on a few times before it worked then even when I could shift out of first everytime I tried to shift into reverse to get out of the parking spot I could hear the gears grind which made no sense to me since I wasn't moving. After clutching in and out a few times I could finally get it into reverse. What's wrong with my car? Is this a bad clutch? Clutch fluid? Bad Transmission?

Clutch master cylinder. Could be a slave cylinder as well, but likely the master cylinder. Check your fluid and see if its low....if it is, then check the inside of the car, back behind the clutch pedal where the rod bolts to it....if you feel fluid, replace the master cylinder.

Also, its common practice to replace the slave and master at the same time. You may want to consider doing this depending on how old they are.

Thanks, I called a mechanic I found on google and he wants me to bring it in today. He said I might be needing a new clutch. I hope he isn't just trying to burn a hole in my wallet.

I had this problem when my clutch went out. Had to press the clutch pedal repeatedly to go into gear. On occasion I had to turn the car off and on to go into first. What was wierd is there was no problem when I was in 2nd-5th gear, but first gave me all sorts of issues. Replaced clutch and problem was solved. If your fluids are fine, sounds like your clutch to me.

I brought it to the mechanic and he said that I need a new clutch and a new master cylinder just like everyone here said but... he said $600 for the clutch and $300 for the cylinder, is this normal? I'm going to bring it to another mechanic because I don't think I need a new clutch since it's never slipped, I just want to replace the master cylinder. Hopefully another mechanic means I won't have to spend $900.

$900 with parts and labor for a clutch and master cylinder is about right. Given you could spend $200-500 doing it yourself (depending what clutch you get...which I'd vote for an ACT HDSS myself), but labor on a clutch install is roughly $350-450, labor on the MC is about $100-150 and the parts are $150-200 and $100-150.
