need help.... new ideler pully

is it common for a car with 100,000 miles to have a belt tensioner go bad?

i think so ... thats why they sell a belt tensioner to make sure your valves dont knock ... i think that what is was ... i may be wrong ... im kinda tired so im not completely sure ...
