Diff install (tapered roller to ball bearing)
http://hybrid.honda-perf.org/tech/lsd/
on this write up, this guy is saying that gsr transmission uses roller tapered roller bearing and he converted it to ball bearing from 01 itr to ease the installation. That way he only has to shim the diff instead of setting the preload on the whole diff.
Has anybody done it this way. So is it the only thing you have to do on ball bearing diff or you have to do something else besides shimming it?
And how easy is it to get those roller bearing races out of the tranny case to get ball bearing bearings in?

It's easy to get the shims from Honda. That's the only place you can get them. Other than that, the setup on the non-tappered bearing is alot easier so the conversion's a good idea. My Civic SI tranny has the non-tappered ball nearings and the only problem with shimming was unbolting and re-bolting the case a couple times.
just to clear things up the statement made about gsr trannys using tapered bearing is incorrect. in fact the difference lies in what model the tranny is. all newer gsr trannys use sealed ball bearings. in my case it was completely the opposite, my 2000 gsr tranny had sealed bearings and the itr lsd diff i purchased had the tapered roller bearings, i simply pulled of the ball bearings off the open diff and installed them on the itr lsd diff.
