ok. so ill be driving and my engine light comes on. it just seems to randomly come on at times. i mean i do nothing in particular each time it comes on. so i cant narrow it down to anthing specific that i am doing. but usually it goes back off five minute or so later... any ideas on why it would be doing this?

You didn't really tell us anything about your car (year would be nice).

The link that B18CivicEg posted is the way to go if you have a 5th gen (92-95) civic. Though if you have a 6th gen (96-00) or newer it has an OBD-II port and I don't believe there's a jumper pin at all on it.

On that note, pep boys, adanved auto, autozone, etc. Will <u>all</u> do free OBD-II scans. Just go there and tell them what year/make/model you have and they'll scan it for free and tell you what codes you're throwing. Obviously when you know what code(s) you are throwing it makes life a whole lot easier.

PS: It usually doesn't matter that the CEL is shutting off (they're soft codes). It stores them in memory (or should). So as long as the CEL went on, you can go there and whether it's on or off at the current time is irrelavant. Though it clears the ECU after a few restarts or if you kill power to the ECU.
