yeeah a buddy of mine already thought about this, cheaper ways to go about it like that OP did. he paid 550! you can get lojack for that much
On a side note. GPS has saved my butt before.
Heres my old EM1. Caught the bastards "red handed."

Put the car back together myself with the thieves own tools which was left inside the car when they got busted.

what did it "save your ***" ? a **** load of work putting the car back together? i wanna run like 220 volts through the car, then when i go to work in the morning, the thieves will be laying around the car like flies in a bug zapper.

what we need is this country to inforce tougher penalties to car theifs ...
******* get a slap on the wrist everytime they are caught...i say cut their thumbs off.

I had the Alpine Mobile Mayday GPS installed on my car when it was new in 2000. Cost me an arm and a leg - and I never used it. They sold the Alpine systems until 2001 and then discontinued the product due to poor sales. I was able to continue monitoring for another 18 months and then the monitoring company went out of business.
GPS won't do **** if they take the car to an underground/concrete parkade.
I suppose the tracking systems are more elegant these days - but what really matters is WHO IS MONITORING THE SIGNALS.
You got lucky!

anyone thought about using a cell phone as a tracking device? maybe something like a Boost Mobile with that friend tracking GPS feature they have so you know where all your friends are. Maybe pick up a Boost Mobile phone plan with extra phone, hide the phone somewhere in the car, turn off any ringers/alerts, etc. Not sure how cost effective those plans/phones are though so it may not be worth it.

do you know why that is? because if they were put away for a long time, you would complain about paying 20-25k a year to house them in jail/prison. when they get back out, they will be doing the same thing over again...

theft over $500 is a felony. being convicted of a felony is a pretty big deal. now it definitely does suck when the thieves are caught and the local police and AG's office decide they are too lazy to prosecute.

did you keep any of there tools? I would have...
Lojack or any type of GPS is a great investment if you are a car fan. I would lose a lot of money if my car was stolen and stripped, but then again I have a tracking device plus some more goodies. good luck to those who try to take my caR.

I DID.
I still have them to this day.
I should have mentioned earlier that I was using LoJack on that 1.
