Default d16y8 swap in 99 DX....Couple of questions.

Hey guys, whats up?

Im mostly into crxs and 88-91 civics, Anyway I started helping a close friend swap his knocking d16y7 with a d16y8. He bought the d16y8 from ebay, only it didnt come with any of the intake, harness, or an ECU. Just a long block basicly....Its looks in great condition though. Anyway the plan is or was pending the responses to this thread, to use the d16y7 intake and harness.

Well today we started to pull the d16y7 and after a problem with not enough space we are going to have to drop it out of the bottom. (not with the car, but the building its in)....
Anyway, should we attempt to use the d16y7 harness and intake and modifly the harness for the y8 or what? OR would it be better to pick up matching obd2a- obd2b ecu and harness? We do know we need to wire up the vtec solieniod, pressure, knock sensor and so on if we use the dx harness....anything else lol?

Should we also locate a y8 intake? Or will the y7 work?

We can get the motor in no prob, but as to get it running aside from needing the proprer p2p obd2 vtec ecu, we are a bit lost. Give us some light please?

I'm not sure about the intake. Are you talking about air box arm, intake manifold? I'm kinda lost there.

The Y7 mani points up, it's a pain in the *** to work with, my advice would be to find a Y8 mani. The Y7 mani is a bit more restrictive, but will work though.

You can use the existing harness and not need to change anything or re-wire anything.

Wiring up VTEC is simply a matter of hooking up a few wires (I don't know the specs for the Y8, it's different for wiring up VTEC on the Z6)

As for the ECU you'll need to find a Y8 ECU, it'll plug right up into the harness.

Or is it a 99/00 Y8? In which case you'll need to do a B-A conversion harness at the ECU.

What year is the Y8?

Why do you have to wire up the knock sensor? I'm pretty sure knock sensors are only on OBD-II non-D motors.

Hope that helps a bit.

Okay, Sorry for the lack of info on my part...
But the y8 itself is from a 97 civic. The car is a 99 civic DX. Obd2b....
The d16y8 is just a long block, no inatke or exhaust, engine harness,or ecu...just block and head. Well we did get the vtec soleniod and knock sensor.

We are willing to use the y7 intake manifold if possible for now, (not the huge plastic box the car once had) I alrdy know its a pain in the *** from messing with it today LOL. Also, If possible we would like to use the dx (d16y7) harness on the y8. I mean, will the dx harness plug right in to a obd2b y8 ECU? And then we just add the needed wires? (We have printed the similar mini-me swap wireing off as well) Will that work?

But we are willing to find a complete d16y8 harness, The only thing I know is that the ECU has to be from a d16y8 like you said above, and have a matching obd2 (A or B) harness.

Oh and there is definitly a knock sensor on the back of the motor, the y7 doesnt have it.

We are also using the DX transmission as well for now.

About picking up a d16y8 engine harness, Can we use a obd2a harness? I know we have to have the obd2a ECU as well. Or are we stuck with obd2b?

Okay we sorted out ALL the wiring...except.
Are the pin outs for the vtec soliniod, pressure, and knock the same for the obd2a and b ECUs?

I have pinouts at the ECU for 96-98, but not 99-00.

In the end we bought a ECU and harness from a 2000 EX, and we are picking up a complete intake from a 99 d16y8 this weekend.

So the only thing left is, do 99 DXs have a fuel tank pressure sensor?
