All of the exhaust bolts are rusted and so are the bolts on the downpipe on the header. Any ideas?

 

soak the s**t out of them with wd-40 let them sit. take the biggest wrench you can to it and pull hard.

 

use a 6 sided socket when you do it, harder to strip the bolts. if that doesnt work, use the trusty dremmel! when I did my exhaust, I had to disconnect the downpipe for the header, unbolt it from the car, then drop the entire exhaust system without dismanteling it, since it was so stubborn.

 

Yeah I'm about to use my dremel tool.

 

WD-40 is junk. You want a product called Fluid Film. You can find it at most john deere dealerships. Stuff works amazing.

PB Blaster or any real penetrating spray. Let it soak for 15 min.
Use a breaker bar... chances are, since they're rusted, those bolts are going to break regardless, and pretty easily.

 

Oxy-Act torch, heat them till they glow red, then loosen them out! If they dont come out with heat, you wont get them out without breaking them.

 

pb blaster or the red hot wrench are the only way to go

 

i use this stuff called kroil....its industrial stuff they use it at shipyards and other places. I found that it works better than anything else. When i was doing my exhaust i didnt have a torch so i tried PB blaster,seafoam deep creep and WD-40.....none worked well. I used some kroil and i finally got them off.

Also i would maybe get a set of stripped bolt sockets. Because i know for my exhaust the bolts were just crumbling even with 6 pt sockets. I know irwin makes a set you can get them at home depot or autozone and craftsman also makes a set that you can get at sears or even kmart now since they started carrying craftsman tools.

so what happens when the bolts break? i have always wondered this, how do you get the ends out of the block??? You have to put new bolts in so what happens to the other half still stuck in your block?

Use 6 sided socket and a impact gun.

The impact gun give small torque pulses to loosen, so the chance for breaking the stud is less than using a breaker bar (bigger momentum)

What kind of torch ? I have heard you really need an oxy-acetlyne torch for that ? Which are kind of pricey.

 

if you have a torch the heat is the key, propane should work just as well, might take longer as it's not as hot

oxygen and propane work too.. But same basic setup, gets expensive.

A normal small propane torch used for pipe soldering etc, may work. Just takes longer to heat up. Make sure its good and red hot!

 

an oxy-acetlyne torch thats what i got thanks to my dad and him having every tool on the planet. only thing he doesnt have i wish he did was a tig got the other lol makes working on anything easy.
