EBAY Tachometer accuracy
I bought my tach from ebay, I've had it for a while now but never wondered about the accuracy. I was having problems pulling all the way to my 7200 factory redline even though the ecu is chipped for 8k (which doesn't matter anyways). My question is, How accurate are they and is there a way to test thieir accuracy?

You could hook up an external tack to it and see what it says. I always thought mine read a little low, then I got an MSD digital window switch. It digitalls displays a number, so I could see what the difference was. At redline, the tach was low by almost 200 rpm!

Sounds right, I bought a LED shift light hooked it up to stock tach, adjustable and set it at 6700-6800 to get the accuracy of a 7k rpm...

That's what i'm using just not an Autometer. My car is a STD no tack from the factory. [QUOTE=Tippyman]

like what you could buy at an auto store or a mechanic would have one its digital and dead on more for working on cars. if its a no name ebay one im sure its off by a little. i got an autometer for sale dirt cheap.
im guessin he thought you had a stock cluster with a tach.. and was telling you to get an external tach. but in this case you bought a cheap external tach, and your lacking a cluster tach. and doubt the accuracy of the external. for the price of the external, you could have purchased a stock cluster w/tach. also my autometer sport comp was off about 200rpms.

I got an Std. too. I'm in the same boat you are. The cheap *** tach I bought reads like 200-300 rpm low at redline.
I said that the msd switch I got was digital, and gave me an exact reading. You could probably rent a digital "mechanic's tach" or sumthing like that that you just hook up under the hood to see what the rpm is.

how did you hook up a shift-lite to the stock cluster tach? i've always wanted to do that instead of having my big bulky autometer tach mounted when my stock one works.
Oh okay. I'm more worried about the tach saying 7k and being more like 7500. Is it something that you just hook to the #1 plug wire, kind of like a timing light? I'd really like to get a full si or ex cluster because I think the 5" tach looks ricey but my odometer only has 69k on it and I want to keep that.

I didn't know that that was possible. Is it very hard to do?

no its very easy.. first take out your cluster. disconnect the bulb that sits on top of the cluster cover. then there are 4 black tabs that hold the plastic cover on the cluster. they are located on top and bottom. stick a flat head in and pry the white plastic a little and slide one tab out at a time. do the top then bottom.. either way. remove the cover and get a philips screw driver. remove the two screws on the back of the cluster for the speedo/odo and remove it. repeat the steps for the ex/si cluster, but put your speedo/odo in the si cluster. reverse steps and viola, but the si/ex cluster must be from the same year as your civic 88/89....90/91. hope this helps

Same way you hooked up that big bulky autometer tach. Just hook up the shift light to the stock tach.
