Default Repairing Blown Headgasket on d16a6

i bought an old d16a6 engine for really cheap...it has a blown headgasket...it's going into my 88 crx hf

i've never done a headgasket repair before but i have my helm's and a good working knowledge of engines

what do i need to buy to fix it and how much would the parts (gaskets) cost?

the engine is on an engine stand...what else should i do to it before installing it?...i.e. replace water pump, get flywheel remachined/lightened, get a lighter crank pulley?

tia

You must get the metal updated headgasket and headbolts from Honda. If you reuse your old headbolts you will have a leaking new headgasket. Engines are easier to work on outside of the car- do what you can

The A6 came with a carbon grafoil headgasket originally- Honda then released a thick metal gasket to be used with the new headbolts. You can use a Y8 gasket for higher compression.

92'-95' CIVIC Metal Composit is what I have heard it called... If you plan to do any work to the engine. Might as well spend the $$$$$ on ARP head studs. Belive me... they will quickly pay for themselves, the next time you have to pull the head. Replace the water pump for sure tho... Also, might as well re-hose it too. As far the flywheel goes, just depends on the condition of it.

Yeah- I would go ARP- they will cost about the same as new headbolts from Honda and would be much stronger.

99% of the time when an aluminum engine blows a headgasket, the head needs to be resurfaced to make it level again. You never want to skimp on this step.

I also agree- I believe Honda made the metal "updated" head gasket thicker to accomodate milling the head some.
