How to tell if tranny is good or bad

Is there any way to tell without cracking it open?

Are the gears ''notchy'' when changed quickly, notably 3rd gear? If they are your Syncromesh is worn. A common fault with the eg tranny.

thats what i thought. I took the VSS off and the hole smelled burnt inside. I'm gonna wreck 'someones' life if 'someone' sold me a broken tranny

Don't kill anyone over it... yet. It's not that difficult to pull the trans apart and inspect the gears and synchos <- always the best way to check!
