Tips and Info on External Ignition Coil Upgrade on a ZC
I wanna upgrade to an external blaster coil. I just needed to know if I just replace the distributor cap and bolt-on the external blaster coil and plug it up, that I get from the MSD kit. Is that all I do. Or is there some other things I need to do. (besides timing it right and aligning the cap.)
yes thats all you need but you dont really need it , the stock ignition system is very good it wont help at all, even mild turbo setups dont need it.
I heard that the internal coil (igniter) were weak. I also think mine is going bad cuz it miss fires underload.
Replace the cap and rotor button with the MSD unit. Disconnect the internal coil and wire the external coil to those 2 disconnected wires. Install the cap, mount the coil, connect the wires, then add the MSD cap to coil wire.
That's it.
That's it.

Lets clear someting up! The coil is a completely different part than the Ignitor, and no, the oem parts are "not" weak.
Using an aftermarket coil has not proven to be an upgrade from factory

I wouldn't run MSD if I were you and I wanted reliability. MSD has left me on the side of I-95 at 4am with crackheads scoping me and my car out with a baby in the car and if it had not been for my pocket knife and some electrical tape and the sheer stroke of luck of me leaving the factory coil in the dizzy I think I wouldn't be here now. If you are concerned about the factory coil I'll send you one I have like 4.

"Worth" is questionable.
Is it worth it just to buy one and install it as an "upgrade"...IMO...no.
The coil did help get rid of my higher RPM ign/ break ups, but then again my OE coil was on its way out anyway. I ended up running the MSD external coil and conerting to an external ignitor (ran an empty dizzy)
A stock coil works fine for most builds and setups. If you want an external coil just to have one, then go for it. Performance wise, you could spend that $100 on something more beneficial.

Why are you replacing the ignitor if you were asking about the coil?

The igniter isnt the actual secondary coil? I thought it was. Reason why I'm going to replace it cuz my civic miss fires under load and I heard that the ignitor goes bad.

No, the ignitor is the ignitor. Ignitor goes bad...the car won't start.

Oh. I guess I need to check some other things then. Thank you for clearing that up. Well since you've been some really good help and I appreciate it. Can you tell me what can cause high fuel pressure besides the fuel pressure regulator going bad. I have a B@M adjustable fpr and I think it went bad cuz my pressure sits at 80 pounds of fuel pressure. That could be my cause of missfires. Running too rich, right?

Yes, the cylindar that is attached to the fire wall and is connected to the fuel rail by a hose.
