Default trouble code p1298 idm failure <----WHAT DOES THIS MEAN???

I've searched the forums and found references to Music, and Human Body Parts...only one post says this is related to the ELD. Can somebody tell me what all this means? (and what to try next?)

<U>my 97 Civic LX does the following:</U>
CEL on
Tach & Speedometer erratic
dash lights "surge & dim" like an alternator problem...
car upshifts & downshifts erratically

<U>it gives me the following codes:</U>
VSS voltage out of range
IDM failure
OS1 bank 1 failure
OS2 bank 2 failure
P0420 catalyst or vaccum problem
304 & 302 ---&gt; misfire
1305 - EGR problem or failure

<U>this is what I've done:</U>
replaced O2 sensors - 1 yr ago
replaced Alternator - 1 yr ago
replaced VSS - recently

kicked it and jammed my toe - recently

Help, I'm searching for answers here, not convos about Iraqi's, music, or *****'s...

Also, how can I test sensors before replacing them? I wasted 100 bucks on a VSS that I prolly didn't need to buy!!!

seems like an electrical

go over your grounds, make sure eveything is grounded properly & and then if you have to add 1 or 2 more
un hook your your battery & step on the brake to drain all power out of ecu & then see if you get the same codes again

You sound like the victim of a TSB that was put out to address this problem. Look in the under-dash fusebox for Fuse 15 (7.5A) - it's probably blown. It blew because more than likely the harness that runs underneath the intake manifold has rubbed against a bracket and shorted out. That fuse also provides power to a few other things, which is why you're getting all those other codes too.

Also, at the top of this forum is a thread that has all the codes and their meanings.

So, if it's shorted, you need to fix that and then replace the fuse.

That would make sense. All the components that are showing codes run into that harness...alt,vss,egr,and os's. So do I have to take off the intake to get to it. I looked under there, and could barely see it...I'm a big guy w/big hands, and...

I checked the (mini)fuses underdash and underhood, and none were blown. However there are "components"/fuses that I can't Identify...like the retactangular brown unit located next to the main relay in the underhood box.

Is there ANYPLACE I can get better pics and diagrams of schematics???

I can't recall people having to take off their IM to fix this....but I also haven't fixed it myself. I just know of the TSB.

What did you find with this? Mine runs, but just throws this code.
Thanks,
Bill
