I just installed a turbo onto my d16 engine using an internal wastegate and it turns out the internal wastegate is set for 10 psi. Should i get an external wastegate set for less boost or can my stock engine handle this much boost??

 

The stock motor can handle aprox. 23psi, assuming the turbo isn't bigger than a t76. The stock ecu is only good to 17psi, after that you'll need hondata.

Actually, with excellent tuning and the right components, it could handle 20psi safely. For a typical daily driven car, average tune, average turbo size, average neglect - I'd say 8-10psi bone stock. More than that and it will start lifting the head and eat headgasgets/ringlands after a few thousand miles.

i ran my stock d16y7 on 14 pounds on a 14b turbo...this turbo was so small though...but it spoolied really fast....street tuned on chrome..

 

Depends on the turbo, depends on the tune, and depends on how strong your motor is.

You can have 250-260 whp on a stock block y7, granted that it is tuned correctly. You could also blow your motor up with 180 whp if its not tuned correctly.

 

boost is an irrelivent # to go by when asking this question. if youre talking about a bone stock bottom end, most people end up making around the 200 hp with a bone stock bottom end d-series motor. ive heard of a few thats hit the mid 200's. and maybe one or 2 thats hit 300 hp. d-series rods are like toothpicks so pushing them past this mid 200 hp level literally means pushing it. tunning makes all the differance in the world, but theres only soo much the rods can take which are the real weak point right before the pistons.
now if youre talking with forged rods, and pistons. the stock sleaves can take 450+ hp on a good tune with no blockguard, posts, or sleaving.

rc injectors 550 or 450 I forgot
hondata s300 (tuned by bubba on his dynojet at 9PSI, 248hp and 189 tq)
car was run hard for almost a year with no problems before it was sold.
this was in a 94 civic hatchback. Ran 12.8 at palmdale on 22 inch slicks

 

i ran 12 psi on my stock y7 on crome ran strong and still did unitl it got total by person who i traded the car too
