Could be the alternator itself or the ELD (electrical load detector). There might be a bad connection somewhere along the wiring to the alternator or fuse box. Are you throwing a CEL?

I'm having a almost identical problem on a 97 Civic LX. Replaced the VSS, and now wondering about the alternator....

What (and where) is a ELD???
