old car vs new car sound system
why does a used hondas lack the sound(mid/low bass) that a newer honda has? for example in my 95 del sol i have everything upgraded..deck all speakers added a amp and sub my stereo sounds great since i invested alot of money into it..but if you turn off the sub...it sounds like crap..well clear but no bass watsoever....... ..then in a newer honda just say 2000+ straight stock system..it seems like there is mid or low bass coming from the 6 1/2's...i dont understand is it that the newer door panels designed differently..or what? i just dont understand..my friend wondered too..he has his mids n highs amped up..they sound clear but lack that lil bass a newer stock system has..anybody kno why..
thats really a vague question, but im sure that it has something to do with having newer speakers and the fact that as younger cars are made.. they tend to have better sound because the car itself is "tighter" ie- less rattling, better/more deadening material, bigger speakers, separate tweeters and maybe even higher power stock radios...
If the speakers are also amped, like the sub, is the x-over on the speaker amp switched to high-pass, if not amped, [off board amp] is there a x-over in the HU and is it switched to high-pass, if none of the above is the case, then I would look at speaker wiring, [phasing] and/or speaker mounting as a possible problem.
A car with aftermarket HU and speakers should sound better then the stock system, assuming the install is done properly, especially the speaker mounting and wiring.
You can check for phasing by fading to the front, turn off sub, then use the balance control to balance all the way to the left speaker then to the right speaker, if bass response is better when you are on the left or right speaker then when both are on, the speakers are out of phase you will need to pull a speaker and switch the wires around.
If there is little differance in bass response when you balance, [it is very noticeable] then there is probably a problem with the speaker mounting, specifically the speaker mounting is not airtight, it must be for bass response.
More info..
What is the makes and models of the equipment?

Newer cars sound better, simply because manufacturers strive to make improvements on older designs. A 95 Civic will have a better sounding stock stereo compared to a Civic from the 80's. Of course a 2005 Civic will sound better than a 95 Civic.

True. And alot of newer cars are also coming factory amplified which makes it harder to change out the system. Then you have to start bypassing the amp and all that good stuff. But they sound really good.
But also keep in mind that audio is not exactly what auto manufacturers spend alot of time on so even a stock amplified system can never be as good as a good quality aftermarket one.
