Default Car problems! Help is appreciated.

First off, I have an 89 Hatch DX. All stock. Last night I was driving when my engine light suddenly came on. The car was still on because the battery light and etc didn't come on, but when I pressed in the gas nothing would happen. The car started to slow, and I didn't want it to kill, so I downshifted and the rpms rose slightly. Again, pressing the gas in didn't do anything. So I pulled over and turned the car off. I then turned it back on, and drove away with no more problems. The car did this last week, but the problem only happened for maybe 2 seconds, then went away.

Any suggestions? Had someone tell me my fuel pump may be going out, but I wasn't so sure.

i think the ecu stores the trouble code for a while. turn the key on and give it a look under the passenger carpet at least.
