all motor LS, cam question
my setup is:
81.5mm LS
11:1 cc'd in chamber
homemade port work
crower VT w/ .5mm over valves
crower 403's.
skunk IM/LS TB
DC 4-2-1 (junk) i use this header cause it has an EGT probe.
motor is untuned right now.
this motor was built and then rebuilt by me... but when i rebuilt it i went super cheap. its burning some oil because i didn't replace valve seals. when i go to replace valve seals, i was thinking about putting in some bigger cams
whats some opinions on my setup with 405a's?
please... dont tell me to throw a VTEC head on. this motor is in my beater... i dont really care that much about it.

i run 404's and make power all the way to 8grand. from what i heard 405's are just way to hard to idle. the 404's are just about a race cam, so the 405 got to be a beast.
but if you can live with the idle go for it
and i think they need more CR than the 11:1 your running now to get the full potential out of them

The thing is though, with very large overlap cams its not just the crappy idle with no vacuum--its the fact that the car is very easy to stall even up to like 1500 rpm--and it becomes much more demanding to drive in traffic especially with a puck style clutch--I drive an a6 with a very large cam and at low rpm its very hard to drive and pull away from a stop smoothly.
if you put the 405s in that motor they would just loose power all over exept maybe the last 500 rpm compared to 404's.
404's are perfect for a 1.8l and will support up to 180ish max on a 1.8l. most people get between 160-175 depending on the build with 404's.

ok, thanks for the advice.
i can't believe theres so many non-vtec builds now. a few years ago hardly anyone was doing big non-vtec builds.
i was going to get some dyno time, but then holidays came sooner than expected. f'ing xmas presents suck..... to buy.
i might do a before and after: 403's vs. 404's on my setup.
thanks for the help again
