Default what would you do?

well unfortunately my engine needs just oil rings, so i was thinking of doing a very basic rebuild. new oem bearings and only power added would be jdm itr o/s pistons...now im figuring it would be about $1200 with parts and labor to rebuild the block...

now here is my dilemma, this is my daily driver and only car so i cant really have any downtime...what i was thinking of doing was purchasing a b18b swap and putting it in while i rebuild the engine, but now i see this c5 block came up for sale...it was a dealer purchased block with only 8k miles on it...another plus is that it has a mugen oil pan...however it has CTR pistons in it which im kind of afraid with daily driving...im hearing mixed review on it...

the pluses are they would be about the same price, but ill have a spare block and there will be very little downtime...

the negatives would be the car doesnt have the original engine anymore, and possibly the compression...

Id say spend 1k or less down on a daily driver... say a decent hatchback or something.... giving you enough time to build up and fix etc.

that will cost me more in the end...insurance, gas, fix something if it goes wrong, and the pain of trying to resell it when im done...

why would u want to resell the beater? one of the best purchases I ever made was my beater. no way in hell would I want to rely on my R as a daily for 100 different reasons. spending money on a swap is just adding to your headaches. you would be better off renting a car through your insurance or something.

<<<who had a dream last night the R was stolen.

at this time, i do not have a garage or want to spend the extra cash maintaining and insuring a 2nd car...when i get a real job and a house i will be getting a new dd...

so in the mean time i just have those two options...

CTR pistons in a B18C1/C5 block wouldn't be very good for daily driving... I like your plan, JDM ITR OS Pistons, that'll give a nice bump in CR, without overkill.

I say buy a spare block and rebuild that. Not as much downtime.

why would CTR pistons in a standard ITR block be bad?

well the compression is around 12.5 - 12.8 depending on headgasket...some people say it's fine, some dont...ive been searching and everything is so mixed in review or speculation it's frustrating...

get the other motor, get a cosmetic headgasket a little thicker than stock to get the compression to where you want to drive the car. you'll still have your old motor for a back up or a build to build it they you want.

if your worried about not haveing the orginal motor you can always freshing up the orginal block and leave it on a stand incase you wanna use it or sale/trade the car in that way it will have the orginal motor in it.

plus im sure you could easily sale the other motor with the high compression pistons, theres always someone looking for something like that.

if you wanna mess around with compression ratios heres a chart that will give you a rough idea what your going to be playing with http://www.c-speedracing.com/h...c.php
