Default Stripped Ball Joint Stud?

So I was trying to torque down the castle nut, and then it just started spinning and spinning. Now the thing just keeps spinning and spinning, and won't go up or down either. The castle nut is as far up the stud as I'd expected it to go and the cotter pin is in, but I just can't torque the damn thing down. Is this normal? Is the stud stripped? If so, do I need to do all of the work I just did over?

PLEASE DON'T DO THAT!!! ^^^

Try by jacking up the car from the lower control arm.
Resting the weight of the car on the lower ball joint might work.

Yeah, I just jacked up everything from the LCA and it wasn't tightening any more. The thing that is just worrying me about it is that it isn't coming off either. I am also definitely seeing some metal shavings coming through the castle nut.

I'm not worried about getting it off right now too bad. I'm just worried about my saftey and whether the car is going to get fucked up if this thing isn't tightened down. I'll worry about getting it off when I need to the next time. So please just keep it to comments on the actual problem or a fix (harsh, but I just need to get this figured out).

i had the same problem. get some vise grips and lock them in place. use that to put the pressure on the balljoint while you tighten or loosen it.

Tomorrow I'm going to drop it down and let it sit on the wheel with a full load for a bit and then see if I can't get the damn thing tight. If that doesn't work I'm going the vice grips/c-clamp route. If those both fail I might try and get a hold of an impact and try to cram the damn thing on. The last resort will be to just go buy another new ball joint at the local auto parts store and run the car to the closest mechanic and have him press the thing in for me. Why does working on cars have to be such a PITA?

Hey dont drive that car.Its very dangerous. My friends had the same problem and the nut came loose and slipped through the cotter pin and he was doing 70mph on the freeway and hit a bump and the car went to the right crashing into an SUV and then spun in 2 360s hitting 2 more cars and hit the wall and he had a alot of face and head injury.Trust me.Get a new part and replace it or youll be in debt like him of 3 cars suing him for over 100,000 in damages.Be careful bro,Darrell

No doubt.. Please just replace the damn balljoints!!! Its like 1-2 hrs to fix it right and be done, pull the retaining clip out, pound the balljoint out from the bottom/stud, the pound the new one in and put the clip back on there.. they are like 20-40 bucks..
Every one telling him to just use a stripped out balljoint

A bud of mine is bringing over his compressor and impact tonight. This is the route even the friend of mine that is a Honda Certified mechanic recommended to take. Thanks for all the help!

The impact wouldn't fit but instead we sandwiched the castle nuts on (the old and the new with a cotter pin in the middle). Seems pretty sound to me.

get a impact gun man its the best thing! or have someone stand on top of the rotor/brakes with alot of weight then try wrenching the bolt. spray some wd40 too, maybe the tread has dirt on it and its making the bolt get stuck to it.

chase the threads with a die. and tap the old castle nut.

the threads on the castle nut will stretch. they need to be rethreaded before reusing. im just saying this out of tons of experience. it helps a lot to have a good custom set of metric and honda compatible tap and die, for all occasions.

common honda sizes you should have.
8x1.25
10x1.25
12x1.25

Still have a pop. I'm guessing that maybe the bottom is bad too.

Well, Advance is going to warranty the thing so I yanked the thing off today (took a dremel drill to the nut), and I'm gonna give it a go at again tomorrow. I'd rather be safe than sorry, and since its free its a pretty easy decision to make. It was still popping at times too, which made me nervous. Easy decision. I bought a lower today too, JIC.

Wow. Punctuate please. I started asking here first, then was able to contact my friend. Complicated thought process, I know.

P.S. If you read below you would see that I went ahead and replaced it. /footinmouth

The new one is on and things are perfect. Nothing stripped and no pops. Thanks for the input!
