Ball Joints Busted?
My lower ball joint bolt on the gsr spindles spin when ever i try and tighten the bolts down. also my upper ball joints are doing the same thing. i used a knuckle seperator to get them apart. i checked my ball joints on the stock spindles and they did the same thing. Are they busted and if so if i didnt want to go get them replaced then could i just take my air gun and torque them down and not worry about it till i had the money or felt like it. Is it safe to run on busted ball joints or do i need to get them replaced?
Also i have integra ss lines for the upgrade and was wondering if the longer ones go in the front b/c the are really long and if the shorter go in the back?

Re: Ball Joints Busted? (EriK20)
ball joints suck. period. see if you can get an impact gun to tighten them down. if that does not work, then you can get away wiht using a very thin pair of vice grips to hold the stud while you tighten the nut. just make sure you get the cotter pin through

If you use quick movements when tightening them down you help prevent slippage. I wouldn't recommend using vice grips or anything attached to the threads...they crush easy....but you can use a coat hanger (or a thin but strong piece of metal) to fit into the cotterpin hole to get you leverage.

(***This applies to the lower balljoint***)
Try putting your jack under the LCA, and supporting it (don't remove the car from jackstands). Have your friend push down the disc while you try tightening it. If you have rims, try putting the rim on, and standing on the lip to apply more pressure than just pushing.
Your balljoint stud has a taper on the smooth part that fits into the LCA, and this pressure will help bind up the stud and keep it from spinning. That is unless you have already damaged the studs/threads w/ a vice grip or hammer. You will know if this is the case when your castle nut just wont thread on all the way to the LCA. In that case, you will have to replace the balljoint (as I did twice).
If you did damage the studs, just screw on the nuts as far as they go, and try to saftey wire the nut into place. If you can get a saftey wire or cotter pin in there, then drive it to a mechanic and have them replace the balljoint. Balljoints are only $30.00 ($40 directly from honda) so don't let them tell you otherwise (Firestone tried to sell me one for $120.00 plus $70 labor ).
Good luck...
