Default need help: turbo leaking oil like crazy...

Hey guys,

My situation is that I have a td06 16g turbo and I just got it. no shaft play or side-to-side end play. I tried to clock the turbo but it has a stop built in on the exhaust housing. That is not my biggest concern - it is the ridiculous amount of oil I found when I took the exhaust housing off. I'm wondering if the seals are blown. Anyone's advice is greatly appreciated. Here is a link to some pics - the oil is coming from the identified parts on the pics.

Please let me know if I need a rebuild.

Hi, this is a used turbo. I specifically asked if the seals were blown when I bought it and the guy said no. The turbo looks really clean on a general basis. I ran oil through it just to test before it was installed on the car and this was the result. I have never really taken apart a turbo to change the seals and my previous turbos were t3/t4's.

turbos use the exhaust gas pressure to help keep oil out of the turbine housing. so when there is no pressure in the exhaust housing from the exhaust gas, oil may leak.

doesnt exhaust pressure just keep oil in when a turbo has bad seals, and the seals when good dont have any prob leaking oil? and it only keeps it in when its in boost. and leaks at idol or after you left off

WHy not just send it off to a place like majestic turbo, or turbonetics and have them look at it for a small fee, this will let you know for sure....

And if it needs fixing, they can do it.

Because nothing is worse than buying a used turbo for a fraction of the new cost, and then paying for a rebuild that still costs half that of a new snail.

If you have your kit all ready to go, I'd suggest putting it on & testing it out. Usually revving it out of gear will tell you what you need to know w/o producing more boost than the ecu can handle. If it blows a crapload of smoke (after burning that initial oil out), then the seals are probably ****. Of course this assumes you have an oil restrictor.
