pics of the turbo

sorry no recent pics
I am thinking that my oil restrictor wasnt small enough and there was too much oil pressure and blew the seals?? just a guess, how much would it cost to get new seals put in? thanks for the help

i just looked and my feed is a -3 an fitting with no retrictor, i thought it was restriced because it looked small to me but I guess its not as small as i thought. Could this be why it is leaking oil and if so are my seals gone or can I just get a restrictor and it will stop leaking? sorry for posting so much I am just in a hurry for answers..

also my oil drain is at a 45 degree angle and not strait down, could this cause the seal to leak?

I dont think you would "blow" the seals if you just ran it for couple mins? I had oil backing up because my drain line was kinked and i drove it like that for a week, and than fixed the line and everything is fine.

I would run a restrictor try that, but make sure u are getting enough oil, i blew a turbo with too small a restrictor. Search here for oil restrictors and it should say what size it should be for ball bearing and non bb turbos

i was told the turbo was brand new, and i was guessing it was because it was spotless, no carbon buildup in any crack

would it hurt that the oil drain is not directly strait down? its a like a slight 30% degree angle down

i put the fitting as high up as i could, i think my oil drain line was too long too, it went way out then looped back in so it wasnt very vertical

if i put the restrictor on my fitting at the begining of the sending line and not the end on the turbo would it still work fine?

You need to find out what your oil pressure is at idle before simply restricting it. Also, CHECK YOUR OIL DRAIN FLANGE itself. There are some out there that are not the right size apeture (should be over 1/2 inch) and is cause the oil drain to back up. I have seen where the oil drain flange gasket will BLOCK oil from going through the flange down to the return line. This especially happens when oil pressure goes up (as rpms increase).

Cliff notes:
1) Check any blockage from the return flange and return flange gasket - make sure you have a newer return flange over 1/2 inch

2) check the gasket that fits b/w the oil return portion of the turbo and oil return flange. If it is blocking the apeture, trim the excess gasket that is over the return hole.

3) Check oil pressure at the line before using restrictors. You may be causing more harm than good.

my drain hose is over a 1/2 inch, im using the b r fittings oil line kit except im runing my sending line from a sandwitch adapter, and my turbo dosnt have a drain flange, the drain on it is a female fitting and i have a 22mm to npt fitting on it then a npt to a an fitting on that to connect my drain line, its rigged up but it worked

I'm not talking about the HOSE diameter, I specifically stated the FLANGE diameter about .59375" for Garrett T3 based turbochargers.

An oil pressure gauge is needed for the block and one can be rented at autozone for the line. The car needs to be able to attempt to turn over to find out.

the drain is big enough im sure, its a female port so the fittings i got for it are the same size as its diameter, only one size will fit it dosnt have like a univerzal flange like most turbos, i believe the turbo is a t25 made for a rwd car like a sr20 240sx

OK, so what are some good "rule of thumbs" to go by. Like XX Pressure should have .XX size hole restrictor? Or do you have any formulas to go by?

ok so ive researched a little bit and ive came up with sense my turbo is new and the amount of oil that came out of my turbo, that is has to be ball bearing, so I am goin to get a .035 ball bearing restrictor and see how it works out

That is dangerous. You're not measuring your apeture of the drain flange and you're still going to put a .035" restrictor. You WILL ruin that turbo without these checks. Don't be lazy. CHECK.

Only a turbocharger that you're using that is water-cooled can be at that restriction. EVEN THEN, you need to CHECK.

Rule of thumb for Hondas: 20-40psi oil pressure at idle 70-80psi at WOT. At that point for a Journal bearing T3/T4 FROM GARRETT (assuming -3AN line) -10AN Return with .59" opening at the flange, NO restrictor is needed. If higher than 100psi at WOT, then .60" or so is needed. Anything more, and something is wrong with your oil pressure system.

Prepare for imminent turbo failure.

Hey, where'd you get that turbo from anyway?

Did you mean .060" or you really mean over half an inch? I assume you meant .060"? Being that the flange opening is .59" already... Also are you are talking about the oil pressure at the block and not the turbo correct?
