changing head gasket on 98 d series
hey sorry if some one asked this already but i couldn't find a previos one. i have to replace my ****, i got the new one. i need to know the torque specs on the head and valve cover. also any tips would be helpful. this is prety much my first honda i never took the head of of an overhead cam only old chevy v8's, and i dont want to f up the cam or anything.
How many miles are on it? If its over 90k or damn close to it...while the head is on it may be a great idea to replace the timing belt/water pump while everything is all opened up. Its a relatively costly maintainence procedure that you can save ALOT of money if you do it at the same time since the head will be off anyways.
As far as torque specs...someone on here should definetly be able to help you out. I'll search around and see what I can find in the meantime. If I come up with anything good...i'll link you.

its got about 130,000 miles i proly will chnge the timming belt to, how much does a water pump go for? i also have to get a f*king heala-coil in # 3 cylinder(i bought it in nevada and the guy i bought it from had a tune up done before i picked it up and the shop crossthreaded the damned plug in. they said they would take care of it if i brought the car back but its a 9 hr drive!)

Sucks about the crossthread man! I think the water pump is under a hundred bucks. Call your local Autozone/Kragen type place and ask them for a quote. They'll be alot more helpful with pricing than I can be.

If you're removing the headgasket, you also have the opportunity to lap the valves. I'd just do the exhaust valves and clean the deposits off of them. I found a can of permatex gasket remover is excellent at removing carbon deposits in the cylinder head.

I think the valve cover only needs to be torqued to like 7 or 8 ft-lbs. Its not much, you can basically just hand tighten it by putting a socket on a screwdriver, and when it feels tight, leave it at that. They snap pretty easy, so be careful not to overtighten.

Yeah except for the bolt that both the waterpump and alternator share. I snapped that one and ended up drilling it out by drilling a hole through the fender area to get to it.

I think a new water pump from Honda is not much more than an autozone/kragen deal, I think I paid $58 for mine. Using Honda stuff when possible and it doesn't cost and arm and a leg puts my mind at ease. Prolly not really a difference, but oh well.
