to tell what motor you have.. look on the front of the motor by the radiator.. on the left side of the block there will be a stamp. itll say something like d15b8, d16z6. something like that

If your car has a D16z6 it has been swapped. That motor came from your year, but the EX model.
Its a single cam vtec, and the motor that SHOULD have came with your car would be a D16y7 which is a non vtec. I know the Y7's came in the 96-00 civics, so im not totally sure if it was in EG's too but its definitely a non vtec motor your car should have came with.
So if your car has the EX transmission too...consider yourself pretty lucky

No, The dx came with a D15

Ok..I kinda figured that was wrong. If they switched the z6 to the y8, i KIND of assumed they'd switch the non vtec ones as well.

No problem. Id be a lot happier if mine did come with any sort of D16. Then again, id be happy if that bitch in the dodge neon didnt pull out in front of me and expletive up my d15
