Default spool gun

Anyone ever use one for welding aluminum. Im talking production work.

I used a millermatic210 today for the first time. It welds really nice but keeps burning up the tips. Im talking like every 5 min I had to change it. A Jod that should have taken 1hr took 2. Pertty frustrating

Any help would be great.

TIA
Jim

you might try going one tip size larger .030 wire use .035 tip. You may also try to run a little more wire speed to get the wire slightly further out from the tip a very small amount this will also help keep the heat away from the tip. I have never had that problem but I almost always use the tip trick

I tried the larger tip and it made no difference. I will try to back away from the piece im welding a little more.

thanks for the tips

That's what I do and it works fine.

what thickness, speed, joint type, etc.

I used one in class (mastered it in 1hr.) - Lincoln 250 with the expensive gun on 14g
found out that changing even .2volts made the difference between perfect and not qutie good enough. Al also likes high feed speed - used setting 9 on the gun to keep heating building up too much on 14g

I'd imagine you need to crank up the speed a bit and push at a steeper angle than mild - dragging equals more heat, which travels up the wire, heating it up, causing less voltage needed to melt it, meaning starting voltage is too high after a few seconds
