Default itr cams or something bigger?

im currently in the process of putting together a simple lsvtec. friend of mine sold me dual valves springs, retainers, new oem valves, and itr cams for $450. been thinking of selling them and putting the $ towards something bigger. would i get the full benefit of having bigger cams on a stock ls block?

What pistons and rods are you using?

What is the motor for exactly?

I would do that before even worrying about cams.

What good is a motor with a tossed rod

ls blocks are pretty sturdy from the factory. imo until you start puttin boost upon boost then stock block is good to put down some h.p., i don't see any reason y the itr cams would give you any problems.

You arn't using an LS head so what are you talking about?

To best use ITR cams you'll be revving pretty high, and heck even the 8200 rpm stock for a b16 is too much for a lsvtec with out any bottom end work.

Revs kills motors, I know its a huge simlpefaction but LS motors arn't made to spin that high, sure they are stout but they rather see 50HP more then 500 revs more. Rods and the bolts being the weakest link.

What I would do is spend that money getting the rods shotpeened and polished and ARP rod bolts.

ARP rod bolts at the least. Stock LS rod bolts start to stretch ~ 6000-6500 rpm
And while you're in there, get the crank balanced and micropolished.

Thank you Charles, now someone who knows what they are talking about backs maybe they will listen before the grenade that is there rods goes off because taching them to 8K sure pulls the pin

Off hand and semi on topic, isnt the crank good for quite a bit more? I turn my stock LS crank to 8500.

As far as I know, the crank is good to 8-something. All B-series cranks are balanced to some extent, there's just differences between how high the revs.

Or so I've been taught. I've seen LS cranks spin to 9,000+.

You arn't using an LS head so what are you talki

i meant that people around here have just thrown on vtec heads on their ls blocks (used, never rebuilt, some with a lot of miles on them) and had success.

my question is should stick with itr cams or would skunk2 pro 2 be too big of a cam for me with a stock block

They are foolish and lucky on borrowd time, it's that simple.

if you really must do it your way ITRs would behave alot better then s2 pro2 on that motor.

As nicely as I can say this search.

Skunk2 pro2s are big cams that want alot of comp and need to rev, ITRs are a stock part thats pretty badass for what they are but still a stock part made for a stock street car.
