Destroyed water pump?
Was driving back from Santa Cruz last night, pull off the freeway and I notice my engine idling really rough around 1k RPM's (idle set at 800rpm's) and some white smoke coming from the left side of my hood/engine bay. I look under the car and I see a steady stream of coolant dripping from the area directly under my water pump...question is: Did I my water pump decide to a-splode last night or is there another area directly under or around the crank pulley that could leak anti-freeze in a steady stream?
Already smelled my exhaust and it doesn't smell sweet at all
.
Thanks!

The waterpump has a seal in it. When the seal goes bad it leaks through the hole. kind of a safety issue so that the pump doesnt freeze up and freeze the motor and ruin more parts. Whenever you do a timing belt change, you should replace the water pump.

So you're saying that for safety purposes, there's a relief hole in the pump that opens up when the water pump seal goes bad? So this would explain my rough idle (water pump seized up)? I'm gonna go out right now to check out the water pump and see what's up

You probably just blew out the waterpump gasket, as stated before. If you don't wanna change everything out, you should be ok with just getting the gasket.
But, in all honesty, while you got it apart, might as well replace all those parts. Might as well...

no not the o-ring seal, they're talking about the shaft seal in the water pump. when the shaft seal goes bad the coolant come out though what they call a weep hole. its not replaceable. gotta get the whole sha-bang

Oh, thanx for the correction.
Still though, i'd replace everything.

Yeah, thanks for the input everyone. I'm planning to replace everything once the parts come in
...now I just need to figure out the easiest way to get that crank pulley off using hand tools

this happened to me last easter... there were signs that it was going bad, & i put it off untill i bearly got home... what happened was the impeller started to rub against the pump shell, & it wore the circle into an oval... a little complicated, but i still have it if u wanna see pics...
but when i changed it, i got the pump, & timing belt... its actually not that hard to get the pully off, just make sure u have a goo breaker bar, & i would say if u have 1/2'' sockets, use them... hope this helps alittle...
oh, & if u ever need your car to get these parts, i recomend u dont, but if need be fill ur radiator w/ water uo to the top and make sure u have some in ur over flow tank... thun only put ur radiator cap on 1/2 way... one click or something, so that it DOESN't seal all the way, & lets the preasure out so the fluid isn't being forced out of the whole from the preasure...

To get the crank pulley off you can buy a puller from Snap-on i believe, Luckily mine fell off while i was driving and i didn't need to use a puller. Hahahaha

to break the harmonic damper pulley bolt with just hand tools try putting the car in gear with the parking break set and get a breaker bar to break it loose. all 4 tires need to be on the ground for this to work though. other wise if you need to jack it up remove the driver side wheel and have a freind hold the brakes while you loosen the bolt. once again the trans will need to be in gear for that one. doing this basically uses the clutch and drive train to keep the motor from turning. it's not the greatest way of doing it but without air tools or special tools etc. it's about the only way you'll get it done.
