Alright, so i'm looking to buy a new car and i was looking at 98-01 accords, but i've heard that the transmission might go bad on you.

I'm looking at i4's and v6's auto, coupe or sedans, can you tell me what you guys've seen cause i don't want to spend 6K and end up with a bad transmission

 

automatics are known to have issues. Maybe find a car that has had theirs replaced or fixed already, which will be fun.
Otherwise just get a 5th generation accord since they are much better :D

 

you sure the older ones are better? i need something that lasts w/o having to pay 1K in repairs.

 

no the older ones are not better. just dont get the automatic v6's. they have transmission recallsand are known to fail before 100,000 miles. 4 cylinder is the way to go. coupe or sedan doesnt matter. i prefer sedan, as i have one myself. its all up to u.

 

my *** greddy. Ask around about how many people love the 5th generation accord and you will get 5 million replying about them.
I love mine and I don't have many problems at all. Once they are cleaned up they look better than the 6th generation accords anyway. Get a nice 5th gen accord with low miles and you'll be set for a good while.
I love mine and there is no way in hell I'd trade mine for a 6th generation, they are to fat and heavy..

 

98-02 auto trans had the tapered differential bearings
to put it mildly...... You couldn't chase me fast enough to GIVE me one of those P.O.S. transmissions. 94-97 2.2 Accords are freakin TANKS I've seen loads of those with 1/2 million miles.

 

yea i agree, it's just the 98+ looks a little cleaner. idk, i'll have to look, i just don't want a tan one.

 

or just get 5 speed,,,,no issues there

 

lol, yeah I really wish mine wasn't tan. If I don't move to Hawaii in a few years I'm going to repaint it.
You seriously can make a 5th gen look better than a 6th though, it's just stock doesn't look as good sometimes.
Also you can probably get a 5th gen with low miles for the price of a 6th gen with much higher miles... and that would be a very good choice.

 

i dont really know that much about cars in general but i bought a 97 accord EX 5 spd (which is 5th gen) with 100k miles on it and on my way home the transmission locked up. Now, 1500 dollars later, I have a tranny with 5k miles on it and a brand new clutch, but it put me in debt.

 

Hell, If a manual transmission ***** up, it's usually the owners fault because they don't know how to shift, so please don't blame it on the car. For many cars, manual transmissions last a long time.

okay fine, i'll look into it, but now that i have the money i'm looking for a car that'll last and looks good, the 97's already a year old.

Lol, just because of the year, it doesnt mean it won't be reliable. Less miles is what makes the difference. If you maybe said in 1996 "oo it's old it's a 1987", it might be different since cars werent as reliable.
Trust me, 94' - 97' accords are popular for a reason, just look around your city for them and youll find a crapload. There are such a rediculous amount of them at my college since broke college students can afford this amazing car and know they don't suck.

honestly, yes.

also keep in mind I bet the 97 would be cheaper because it's an older generation which means more room for small repairs etc. Most used cars need something done to them

 

Also to be more productive and say more than 5th gens are awesome I'll give a list of common issues with the car. There will be ones with 6th gen but I'm not as familiar.

-Lock actuators acts up and buzz, but not dysfunctional.
-The gasket for the mid-exhaust pipe sticks, causing a buzzing noise.
-EGR ports clog up, which might make you fail emissions. No cost in parts to repair, only to clean it out, which a monkey could do. (http://members.troublecodes.net/hond...5AccordEGR.htm notice who wrote the DIY, Hondadude... he knows his ****)
-Valve cover gasket and spark plug gaskets can leak on some cars. 15 dollar repair if you know barely anything about cars. (many cars can have that problem as gaskets do dry up and become brittle.)

I really can't think of anything else. These are all non fatal issues that don't happen in every car and aren't difficult to fix.

Don't let them talk you out of a 6th gen accord...
I knew about it and still got a 6th gen because i liked the way they look much better than the 5th gen, and it had a roomier interior.
Tranny has issues yes... but if it has been replaced or test drive proves to be good then just a little care and paying attention to when your car needs matenince you will be fine.
6th gen fine as a driving car so long as you don't want to add power which would prolly cause you to wear out your tranny faster.

5th gen does have a better trans cannot deny that, but if you like the stylings better of a 6th gen go for it... do your homework on the car and make sure it has been taken car e of....

 

IMO I say go with the 4 cylinder... I know you prolly dont wanna 5 speed but my transmission works jus fine with 141k miles on it... So far the only thing I've had to fix on my 98 accord sedan is the breaks n tires... other than that it runs very smoothly... Im impressed with what it is.. I prefer 6th gen over the others because they're arent as many out there that are fixed up but that also means there are less performance parts for it... and it is very hard to make a full JDM car cause the JDM accord is quite a bit different. it has the same style jus it's a lot different in little ways... but if you want sumthin you can find mad parts for I'd say 5th gen cause parts n kits are easy to come by on almost any honda site.

 

i'm going to look around, if i see a good 4 cylinder 6th gen i'll prob get that, or if i see a good 5th gen i'll go towards that. Or if i see a good altima, i'll go towards that even. lol. i'll just have to look, compare prices and mileage.
