Made a det can - what does detonation sound like through it?
I made myself a det can. I bolted down a hollow brass piece to the AC mount bracket and ran a hose to a pair of enclosed headphones. I can hear the engine ticking just fine up to about 4.5krpm, after that the turbo spools and it is very hard to discern the engine noise. The best I can describe it is it just sounds like a bunch of air rushing through.
I know what detonation sounds like without a det can (like rocks kicking up into the wheel well but from the engine), but I am wondering what detonation exactly sounds like through a det can. Is it really obvious when you hear it or can anyone describe what it sounds like?

It sounds like your description of rocks kicking up in the wheel well, but only ALOT louder lol. Its pretty obvious. I like to mount my det can on the back of the engine block to avoid as much turbo noise as possible. The head and injectors make alot of noise too.
I was told it sounded like rice falling on tin foil. I never heard it on mine though, well i thought i heard it, pretty sure it was my MSD though, or injectors. All i know is i pulled timiing out and it never stopped, would even do it free revving, so i figured no way it was detonating. Plus, it made it through four track days this summer, so i'm pretty sure i'm okay
I too went off the back of the block, and make sure the hose isn't resting on anything.
