how can i get my crank pulley off.
Im putting my car back together after breaking a timing belt at 6k rpm. and so i've put omni power valves in and replaced all the old belts (car has been sitting for six months) and now i need to put on the new timing belt, problem is i cant get my crank pulley off to completely remove all that plastic covering from around the bottom timing gear. i've tried putting a long wrench on it and all it does is move the pistons up or down half an inch and then when i stop putting pressure on the wrench they go back to where they were before. Help i have no clue how to get this crank pulley off or how to get the belt on w/o removing the crank pulley....
you need one of these and some strength because that bolt is on tight:

haha good luck. i once took my block all the way to the shop. carried it inside (that thing weighs like an *itch) and with a power air rachet took it off.

The "adapter" you see is a Honda crank pulley tool. It fits in the hex-shaped space in the crank pulley to hold it in place while you use a breaker bar w/ 19mm socket to remove the bolt. It runs about $50-$60 I think.
I actually used an impact wrench to remove the bolt, and then used the crank pulley tool to hold the crank in place while I torqued the bolt to 134 lb-ft with my torque wrench.

You wont be able to get the timing belt on without taking off the crank pulley.
If you go to Napa or Schucks or a tool truck you can purchase a 'chain wrench'. Its basically a bar with angled teeth at the end and a bike chain. You wrap the chain around the pully and the teeth hold the pulley and the chain tightens as you try to loosen the bolt. VERY affordable and a good tool to have. Its pretty universal so you can use it on other pulleys as well.

Plenty of times. Recently used it to put together my fully built H22 bottom end. It puts tiny little knicks on the lip of the pulley but it doesnt touch the belt at all. Not enough to throw it off balance either. Works great and doesnt cost a small fortune like a Matco cordless impact.

After trying for a few days, I just ended up taking my block to the shop up the street from me. I asked the guy to help me out because I didnt have an impact and he was cool. Glad I did because even with the impact gun, it was bitch to get off.

Wrap a piece of leather around the pulley. I have the same thing but never used it. When the times comes to change the t belt on my wife's corolla I may need it.

There are 3 tools on this page that will work, and one is only $15. You will need two breaker bars tho, unless you want to risk breaking your ratchet.
I have the $24.99 tool and worked great.

oh snaps! I didn't know you could get them for that cheap. Heck yeah I need to get me one of those (the $25 one) before the next time I change my timing belt (only 30K miles to go until I change it again at 270K miles
).
).
If you work on cars a lot then get a good electric impact wrench. I bought a Milwaukee electric impact gun rated 300 ft.lbs. I took the pulley nut off with it in<5sec. It may not have as much power as some air guns but it's more convient and take much less spaces.

i broke my crank pulley bolt free in no time with that tool, 2 breaker bars, and a long pipe over one of the breaker bars.
definitely a must have.

if u can't get the above tool, stick a allen wrench in your flywheel to where it catches itself on the tranny bell housing..and use that as a leveler to put pressure on the wrench..i've been doing this when i did have my "Star" tool..it works great, i've even seen some shops do it this way as well...
I've yet to see a flywheel or Allen wrench break this way but i wouldn't recommend this on a lighten flywheel.
