Default possible swap: d16y8 into 90 DX auto

Hi.
My stock-as-can-be automatic tranny 90 DX hatch has 230K on the original engine. I drive the car alot, for work, so I am mainly concerned about reliability and fuel economy. Of course, a little extra power never hurts...
I got the d16y8 out of a 96 EX, with 130K on it. And I got it CHEAP. I plan to rebuild it before dropping it in the car, because the old d15b2 is still running, just not as well as it did in say... 1995.
Anyway, I am wondering:
Can I swap the d16y8 in, convert to mpfi/obd1, and keep the auto tranny?
I mean, the d16y8 is VTEC, but maybe the auto transmission will negate its effects?
The reasons I want to keep the auto tranny:
1) it still works fine
2) i won't have to convert to manual
3) southern california traffic + auto = easier
Thanks in advance.

if you were going to put that 90dx auto trans onto a sohc vtec it would make the car feel like a dog. the grearing wouldnt be correct for that motors powerband. would it work?.... yeah, probably but what would be the point if your not going to gain any performance out of it. just my 2 cents

92-95 ex or si manual should be your best bet.

Wow 230k on a d15b2, I have 185k and its running good with a newer auto tranny. Hopefully I can get 230k out of it.

yeah the olds b2 still runs and starts everytime.
but, it doesn't have enough power for the hilly road that i drive 5 mornings a week. it takes all it has to try and maintain 70mph, and that gets you runover ion th 73 toll road at rush hour... so it is time for a swap

he bought my supercharged D16a6 swap..... we got a lot of work ahead of us.

auto to 5 speed.

dpfi to mpfi.

and a supercharger.

should make his 'daily driver' car fun to drive to work. trust me though, his 'race car' will be a whole different animal. i wouldnt mind turning a few wrenches on that too.

i happen to know his D16y8 swap is for sale.
