Just picked up a D16A6 Si motor and Si tranny yesterday for my minime boost set up.When I pulled the clutch I noticed the flywheel is rusted up pretty good.Should I swap it out for a lightened flywheel,resurface it (how much will that run me) or is it ok to run as is??? Thanks for helpin me out!! I cannot wait for boost!!!

I'm interested too, I'd like to know how much it cost for a resurface or to have a couple lb shaved off the stock one vs an aftermarket flywheel.

 

i got mine shaved at a shop... $5-$15

 

So again is it ok to run it all rusted up???

 

If you dont like your clutch. Just get it resurfaced.

 

But can I run it rusted will it create problems???

 

i wouldnt, its too much work to pull the tranny off because you didnt want to spend a few dollars to get it resurfaced.
might as well see if you can get it lightend a few pounds while your at it.

Sorry, to answer your question, if it's rusted you should at least resurface it.

 

i have ran em rusted...

they end up getting "re-surfaced" by the clutch anyway...

it might waste the clutch slighlty more then normal, but thats it i had no issues with it...

 

If it's light rust, go over it with emery cloth on a block.. If it takes effort to remove it, get it resurfaced.

 

Does resurfacing and lightening the flywheel increase horsepower? Or just enable the motor to rev up and down faster?

 

lets the motor rev faster (less mass spinning) and u have less drivetrain power loss = a tad more power to the ground...

 

its only like 30 ucks to get it resurfaced and its cheap insurance

 

I may just buy a lightened one,any idea how light you can go before having to cross your fingers.Because I have heard of them being to light and shattering.This will be eventually a boosted motor so is it safe to run a lightened flywheel boosted???

 

its safe, but i'm a fan of stockers.

i ran a LIGHT one (8 lbs i think) on my 300.08 hp/250 wtq a6.

took it off because i wanted the heavier factory one for driveability with a crazy clutch.

with that sort of power, no need for a lightened flywheel. i would have done the same.


for NA cars, i love lightened flywheels.
