how much for a 1988 civic DX 4 door?
this place is asking $1,995 and saying 1/2 off because it smokes and the dude thinks its the head gasket, but seems sort of clueless, what would you pay?

So they want $1000?
If the body is good and everything is fine other than the smoke, I'd buy it for that. Just treat it like buying a complete shell until you source the problem. You can swap in a good used D15B2 for less than $500 if you are willing to DIY. You can swap in an even better engine (D16A6, SOHC ZC, DOHC ZC, etc.) with some extra work and money.
If the body is rusty and other stuff is messy/broken, I wouldn't bother paying more than a few hundred.

I got my crx for 1500, with a full b16a swap, and no rust. If there is problems with it i would reconsider paying 2000, even 1000 is a little high unless the body is near perfect. Just my two cents.
$1000 seems like a bit much. You still need to put out money to get the problem fixed (new motor, or rebuild). I wouldn't pay more than $500
