I removed my rack and pinion and replaced my inner and outer tie rod ends and also the rack end bushing, put everything back together and drove it down the road earlier and It is kinda hard to explain, but the steering feels loose and unsafe, anyone have a clue what it would be? Outer Tie Rods to loose? or something elses, anything will help thanks.

 

did you adjust the pinion gearbox?

if everything was installed correctly and you adjusted the gearbox, it should be fine.

if you didnt, then it would have a direct effect to your steering.

so question is, did you install it correctly?

i dont think anyone but the person who did the installation can answer that.

 

I guess I'm confused on what you mean by adjusting the steering box, you mean the but thats on it? I have to adjust the spring or whatever it is, to the specs it says and the torque? If not please point me in the direction you are talking about. or a link where I can read up on it.

wow, didnt know autozone had helms manual online.

what i use is a channel lock wrench, which is the only thing that is big enough to get to the lock nut. then its just a 12mm wrench to tighten it. then lock it up.

there is a spec to the adjustment, but youre just gonna have to tighten it a bit, take the car out for a drive, and come back and readjust until youre happy.

it makes a big difference. its not a complete job without doing this.

but it may not account for everything. the way you describe it, it sounds more messed up than just this. id go over your whole instlalation again.

 

thank you for the help, I read that on the autozone website and it didn't make much sense to me, so because I didn't adjust it is probably why its loose? I'm pretty sure I did everything else right, getting the pinion back into the steering column, u-joint was kinda a pain, but besides that everything went ok. I will rego everything, I didn't use a torque's wrench or anything but I tightened down the inner tie rods, used the lock washers, and then installed the rack and pinion, then put the outers on and tightened them up as much as possible and hooked them into the steering knuckle.
