Default Fast idle due to advanced timing?

I took the Prelude to have the emissions tested and was told the idle was too high to run the test. Idles about 1600-1800 and have tried everything except replacing the IACV which is my last idea. Already did the fast idle adjustment here and checked for vacuum leaks quite a few times.

Emissions shop (down the road from my mechanic) suggested that the timing might be advanced causing the high idle. my mech. did the timing belt about 3 months ago and before he covered everything up I saw the cam gear marks and the alignment appears fine and the engine runs smooth....no sputtering or revving...just a high idle. after the IACV, I am out of ideas.

any suggestions?

yeah the ignition timing is what hes talking about. my car was running like poop and idleing ruff. it was to reatrded. we got it at 15 and it idled a lil better. grab a timing light and check it. if it aint the problem no biggie it only takes a few mins to check.

I tried to check the timing with a buddy of mine and we were not able to find any timing mark on the flywheel. fidanza model.

Fidanza does have the timing marks but they are just little grooves. You're going to have to be very patient and turn the crank very slow to find them....I put dabs of paint on mine before I installed the flywheel and they're still not easy to see.

having a dad that used to be a mechanic ftw

he has this long grabber tool and chalk setup that marks the flywheel nicely at those grooves

but yes having the timing too far advanced will up the idle, however it will not push it that high....what EMS are you running?

Got the ECU directly from MT-BER..(John here on H-T). He set the chip and settings so I trust him...

I have a p14 here as well that I removed. Should I try that and see what the car at least idles at?

this is driving me nuts!!

edit: should have said that when shifting into neutral and letting off the throttle, the rpms dive to just under 1k rpms, and then climb to a steady 1600-1800. So it is almost as if the engine wants to idle correctly, but isn't. (?)

cool, I will take that with tomorrow and have the mech. try it.
