Loud, high pitch noise when reversing! HELP!!
I just finished a swap on my 98 civic. Now the car is running great, but when I am reversing, the car lets out a loud, high pitched squeal. I dont know what could be causing this, but it only happens in reverse.
The power steering is disconnected because I'm waiting for a bracket/pump to come in. Could the noise be caused by the car previously having PS?
Also, will having PS disconnected damage the rack and pinion or PS lines?

You mean like an RC car noise [sorta]? Cuz, umm... That's normal.
I assume you mean like a belt squealing or something? Something real high pitched and annoying?

i've been wondering what that noise was. What is it caused by?

Its how the gears in reverse mesh together. they are desinged differently than all the forward gears. thats why they grind easier too.
About the noise, Does it change at all when you turn?

Yea Reverse does not have syncros, thats why if ur moving it'll grind. They're also straight gears, unlike the other gears...so i guess thats what made that noise. Thanks!

The reason your reverse gears let out that high pitched noise is the way they are cut. Regular gears are straight cut, where as reverse is Helical cut. Helical cut gears are stronger than straight cut gears. Thats why all drag cars have them and they are loud as hell, thats why they dont put them in DD's.
Oh...and reverse should never grind, because you are supposed to put the shifter into first gear, then into reverse. It doesnt grind because it doesnt have sychros. You have to stop the tranny spinning forward in order to put in reverse.
my car never made the noise before the swap though. when i turn the wheel the noise get louder and screechier (if thats a word). thats why i was wondering if it's from the power steering being disconnected.
