i think it might be my cat, since i have none
but i just want to make shure it is not something else, and autozoine sucks, i have to leave a deposit of 180 bucks

Heh, 100% of the time I've never heard that it was the gas cap that was off or broken. But hey, it is possible, u think if this guy's trying to serach and spending alot of time trying to fix this he'd notice his cap off. Also, when my cap is off and the car is on I don't get a cel, maybe only obd2b or something has it.
Anyways, to answer ur problem. To check and find out what the cel is, yes, the easiest way is to use a paperclip, U put it in a small 2 pin connector that is directly under the passenger side of the dash, should be a blue connector, what u do is just put the paperclip inside the connector so it makes the 2 wires touch, then the cel light on ur dash will blink. Count the number of long flashes and short flashes. Long flashes stand for 10's places and short flashes stand for 1 places. Example, 4 long flashes and 3 short flashes is code 43.

uh...no you dont. they offer the service for you. my GF's celica threw a check, i went down there, they were too busy to do it for me, so they let me take the scan tools outside and run it, then bring it back in. they offer scan tools service for free.

Yeah when my girlfriends cel went off i went to autozone and the guy was really cool about it. Scanned it and gave me a print out of the code it threw.
If you don't have a cat and you have an OBDII that is your problem.

just cause they're lazy doesnt mean it isnt free. i went and did this to my GF's car like a month ago.

heres how my haynes manual says to pull codes:
Jumping two pins in the service check connector and reading the check engine light on the intrument panel. to view and trouble codes stored in the PCM memory install a jumper wire into the service connector located under the glove box on the passenger side kick panel. The turn on the ignition switch to the ON position. if any codes are present they will blink a sequence on the check engine light on the instrument panel. This will indicate a number or code that represents a system or component failure. The check engine light will blink a longer blink to represent the first digit of a two digit number and will blink short for the second digit(ex: 1 long blink and 6 short blinks =16) if the system has more then one problem the codes will be displayed in sequence then pause then they will repeat.
i have done this when i didnt have access to a scanner. it works. we just used a piece of wire to "jump" it
