Was traction and handling any better with the wider tires?

I would like it to be a little of the tire tucked in the fender.

I had the 205s with a 40 or 42mm offset rubbed when I hit some bigger bumps went with a 195 50 15 didnt really make a difference in handling and it doesnt rub at all now.

yes good idea! going with a slightly smaller tire will be better if you dont rub! i personally wont use anything smaller than a 40 offset or a bigger than a 195 tire. I hate that sound when it rubs and i hate to have my fenders look wierd after the tire rubs.
